Our plans yesterday were quite messed up, (quelle horreur) and we ended up at the motel, and then cycling 36 miles today - on our day off! It was a shame we couldn't stay around Commercy, as it was a very pretty and busy town, with plenty of shops OPEN. Maybe the clue was in the name!
At least there was no early start this morning, as the luxurious room was ours until 12, yippee!
We covered 15 miles easily, passing enormous chalk cliffs and quarries,
there was a lonely llama in a field, a tiny lady seemingly dressed in a bee-keepers kit, but it was just an enormous white hoody, and 4 road workers each sitting astride a cool box eating lunch - well, it was just after 12.00.
There were a few long hard climbs today, but then we could enjoy the 'sail' downhill again, and even raise one's derrière for a moment or two. Bliss.
We passed through several small villages, the majority of which were again enjoying day-long siestas, and I also spotted Bill - or Ben......one of the Flowerpot Men.
The thrill today was completing over 500 miles, the occasion obviously demanding a photograph.
It was very sunny all day, clear blue skies, and that phrase about mad dogs and Englishmen certainly didn't stop us! (and even after 2 weeks in shorts my little legs are still stubbornly white) We crossed over the river Meuse again, which Paul poetically described as being now just a "piddling stream". After a supermarket shop in Neufchateau for our lunch/tea, I upset Paul by carrying our bread and cheese in my cloth carrier bag as a backpack. He thought it spoilt our "serious cyclists look".......Hmm. Sorry.
We arrived at Landaville, no, we landed at Landaville, at 5ish, and what a strange old house/ farmhouse/castley/country estate this is! Tomorrow our hostess has promised us breakfast literally whenever we wake, and then we shall explore the grounds around. For now, here are 2 views of our room tonight, and a horse and carriage which arrived here an hour ago!
